Frequently Asked Questions

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a natural system of healing which emphasizes the human body's inherent recuperative power to speed healing. Improved spinal function causes improved nervous system and musculoskeletal function. Due to the nervous systems role of controlling cellular, tissue and organ function other systems may experience benefits as well.

How did chiropractic begin?

In 1895 D.D. Palmer of Davenport Iowa founded the modern profession of chiropractic. Although other doctors including Osteopathic doctors and medical doctors practice manipulation, Doctors of Chiropractic perform more than 95% of manipulative treatments in the United States.

What causes the noise (“crack”) often times heard during an adjustment?

When a high-velocity thrust is applied to a joint, gas inside the joint is released causing a cracking sound. The adjustment does not tear muscles, tendons, or injure ligaments or bone. In fact, the adjustment restores normal joint motion, decreases reflex muscle spasm and decreases pain.

Dr. Grace also employs “non-cracking” (ie activator) as well as manual adjusting, soft tissue techniques, physical therapeutics, stretching and exercise procedures. He will utilize the technique that you are most comfortable with and that stands to offer the greatest benefit.

Who can benefit from chiropractic?

Chiropractic is safe and effective for children, adults, and the elderly  alike.  While chiropractic is widely known to help those with neck, back, and shoulder pain, chiropractic is also of great benefit to those suffering from headaches, sports injuries, sciatica, and tendonitis.  Dr. Grace's patients have also reported improvement with a variety of non-muscular skeletal  conditions including:  migraines, asthma, overactive bladder, high blood pressure, dizziness, and impaired balance and coordination.

What can I expect on my first visit?

A health history and physical examination will be performed to help the doctor determine the cause of the problem and how best to treat it. Other diagnostic procedures (X-rays, MRI’s, etc.) will be obtained if indicated.

Does insurance cover chiropractic?

Most insurance plans do cover chiropractic. Insurance companies have found that patients who receive chiropractic care often get better faster, and with less expense than those who use traditional medical approaches.
